Character Name: Balthier
Age: early 30s
Canon: Final Fantasy XII
Canon Point: mid-game, after he’s determined he probably needs to kills his father but hasn’t done it yet; has learned (demi-)gods exist
CRAU: He’s not CRAU, but I do play him early 30s instead of canon’s (incorrect) 23; I don’t make any other changes
History: link
Personality: A sky pirate, Balthier is witty, charming, and resourceful. He’s prone to being a flirt, and likes to entertain or ruffle, partially as a way to keep people at a distance. He sees himself as a free spirit and someone who can see the truth in things. Under that, he’s dealing with unresolved neglect and childhood trauma that literally led him to run away and change his name. He has a deep yearning for connection but is wary of building bonds. The one exception is his partner, Fran, who he trusts entirely; not having her here (unless she apps…) is rough on him.
Balthier is particularly worried about not becoming his abusive father, not putting himself in a situation to get hurt again, and proving to himself that he is not controlled by fate. The demi-gods and transport to another world things are not helping the last one.
Lastly, Balthier has a love for fine and old things, fashion, good food, and revelry. He doesn’t find indulgence to be morally corrupt, and rather finds control and oppression to be more damaging. He can be painfully earnest, which has gotten him into trouble before. He tries to guard and mask it, but he will end up pushing others to be themselves and be honest. He also has a soft spot for mentoring wayward teens.
Abilities and Magical Inventory:
-Piracy including pickpocketing, lock picking, cons, disguises, recon, etc.
-Piloting and aircraft mechanics, though he’s used to magical power sources
-Fashion and Etiquette from his background as a noble
-Acting both for stage and work
-Support Magicks including decoy, vanish, slow, haste, bubble, protect, poison, and minor cure; he will be subject to limitation on using these per his sense of his own world
-Summon he can summon one of the trapped demi-gods from his world to do massive combat support, but it drains him and has a long cool down; it also makes him uncomfortable
-Potions can heal most ailments, but he only has 3 of them
-Manufacted Nethicite a small stone that dulls any ability to use magick; he is NOT thrilled he has this but also knows if activated, it can cause a nuclear explosion type event, so he feels obligated to protect it; one of his father’s inventions
-License Board this is how people attach the the Mist system of magick and weapon usage in his world. His seems to have followed him and eerily adapt for shit here. He keeps this safe because he’s not really sure what happens if someone fucks with it.
Inventory:
-Pistol self-explanatory, but looks very 1700s
-Ashe’s ring the ring he took from the princess as collateral that he also feels weird about
-Jewelry he has a large assortment of earrings and rings of substantial value
Eternal Reward: He will be loved.
And he’s going to be real embarrassed and relieved and uncomfortable about this, because does that mean if he doesn’t get out of here he won’t ever be? Also that’s not what he wants! He wants – to be – pirate things and freedom! Infamous legend! Immortal!
Goals/Ideas: I usually play Balthier post-game, but I’m bringing him here at a more emotionally vulnerable point where he’s questioning if he’s a good or bad person, if he has control over his life, and what he’s capable of re: cruelty and leadership. He also has broken his years long stance of not getting close to people via naturally bonding with this weird party, and is starting to wonder if he made the right choices in his life, and if he should get involved in international politics or just let things be. He has been saying he’s only in it for the reward, but he's a lot more torn up inside.
I think this will play well with the setting, and I want him to have the opportunity to make both some poor choices and be surprised by his own resolve and capacity. He tends to lean heroic, but with him at a lower canon point, I’m open to him organically falling from grace if setting allows. He’s also fun for smut prompts.
